Discrimination is treating people differently based on grounds such as sex, gender, age, and even social status. The common example of discrimination is bullying, there are two types of bullying cyberbullying and direct and indirect bullying.
Cyberbullying is actually one of the most rampant forms of discrimination and since the birth of social media platform such as Facebook. A lot of suicidal cases have been reported as a result of cyberbullying, a lot of young people become insecure, their self-esteem and confidence are so crashed that they resort to engaging in vice behaviors and even suicide.
Over 250 million people in the world are affected by cyberbullying. According to statistics, most of the affected people are teenagers. Cyberbullying causes a negative effect on social structures. The highest number of depressed teenagers have reported cyberbullying as one of the main reason for their depression.
A lot of people who actually bully others online actually are also hiding from their own depressions and ignorance. Most of them vent their anger online because they have no one to talk to. It is so sad that social media was actually invented to connect the world positively but it has ended up affecting the universe so negatively.
The late Wangari Mathai said, “It is the little things we do that matters, let us start by treating each other as one and not discriminate against anyone based on different beliefs and norms, culture.”
