Stephen Stems, Program Development Coordinator, shares few words about Race for Daraja in Kenya!

“The Race for Daraja on the school campus in Kenya can be described as fun, interactive and motivating. It was amazing to see young people running together to promote girls’ education and empowerment. Daraja girls were joined by their peers from five nearby schools – Naibor Secondary, Ngenia Secondary, Nyarigino Secondary, St Jude Girls, and Laikipia Airbase Secondary.

The day commenced with all the participants joining together for a student led spiritual time. The hosts (Daraja girls) took the lead on this. The students and visitors commented and applauded the Daraja girls for their ability to easily interact and make friends.

The Daraja girls showed their prowess on the track and were highly motivated to keep running for their education. The top girls of the race were Ruth Chepengat, Stella Nyawira, Rebecca Lomwa and Mary Meshami. For the boys, Naibor secondary took the lead. All participants including staff celebrated with a dance after the race and then lunch.

In the afternoon we had a group discussion on the following topic- “Life is much brighter when you focus on the things that truly matter.” The girls enjoyed the conversation and discussed the importance of being present and making sacrifices to achieve their goals.”
